Norwich City’s season-long loan deal for Liverpool winger Kaide Gordon has been cut short, both clubs have confirmed.
The Canaries have exercised their option to cancel the deal during the January transfer window, bringing him back to Anfield less than five months after his deadline-day move to Norfolk in the summer.
The 20-year-old’s move has been accelerated by City’s pursuit of Slavia Prague winger Matej Jurasek, which is nearing completion after a package worth about £6 million was agreed upon with the Czech club.
Gordon has struggled for playing time since joining Norwich, starting only once in a 2-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in November due to injuries. He has one goal in ten Championship games, coming off the bench in Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Brighton but remaining there.
The English youth international was brought in to allow Abu Kamara to join Hull for around £5 million, but he was unable to move up the pecking order at Carrow Road.
Sporting director Ben Knapper bolstered head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup’s wide options earlier this month by signing Aston Villa’s Lewis Dobbin on loan until the end of the season, while Onel Hernandez has been preferred over Gordon as an impact option in recent weeks.
Josh Sargent’s return from a long-term groin injury also allows Ante Crnac to resume his previous role on the right, where Oscar Schwartau has started City’s last two games.
According to reports, Liverpool intends to loan Gordon out again before the transfer window closes, as other Football League clubs have expressed interest in him. He has played seven senior games for the Reds since joining from Derby County, where he made his debut under then-manager Wayne Rooney.
A statement on Norwich’s official club channels read: “All at the club thank Kaide for his effort and commitment while a member of the Norwich City squad. We wish him the best in the future.
