The latest Birmingham City injury news as the club prepares to face Swindon Town in the Vertu Trophy
Birmingham City manager Chris Davies could be without five first teamers for the Vertu Trophy last-16 clash with Swindon Town on Tuesday evening.
Blues play the Robins in the quarter-finals of the southern section of the Trophy hoping to continue on the road to Wembley. But they will be without a number of influential players due to injuries and there are doubts about key duo Krystian Bielik and Jay Stansfield.
Bielik and Stansfield appear to be the closest to returning after missing the last two matches with knocks. Speaking on Thursday, Davies said: “They are niggles more than anything else, they aren’t long-term injuries.”
Keshi Anderson and Emil Hansson remain sidelined but Icelandic full-back Alfons Sampsted made his comeback against Lincoln on Saturday. Here is the latest injury news before Blues take on Swindon…
Krystian Bielik
Injury: Unspecified
Bielik was battered and bruised after the New Year’s Day draw with Stockport to such an extent that he has missed Blues’ games with Wigan and Lincoln as a result. The Pole could return this week but Davies might wait for the Exeter City match on Saturday before reintroducing his captain.
Jay Stansfield
Injury: Unspecified
Stansfield appeared to be in some discomfort after being substituted at Stockport and could be seen discussing the issue with the physios on the bench. The 22-year-old will be keen to face his former club Exeter City at St Andrew’s on Saturday.
Keshi Anderson
Injury: Unspecified
Anderson complained of discomfort midway through the Boxing Day draw with Burton Albion and the in-form winger is now set for a spell out of the team. Davies insists Anderson isn’t going to be out long-term, but the 29-year-old isn’t expected to feature against his former club Swindon.
Emil Hansson
Injury: Muscular
Hansson made his first start in more than two months against Blackpool on December 29 but he succumbed to another injury shortly before half-time. Similarly to the one he sustained last time, Hansson pulled up without anyone around him and immediately signalled that he needed to be replaced. Hansson is behind Anderson in his recovery timeframe.
Lee Buchanan
Injury: Knee
Buchanan suffered a serious knee injury during the draw with Blackpool and will miss the remainder of the season. Davies said: “Lee’s injury is quite severe as everyone would have guessed. He will be out for a considerable amount of time with a bad knee injury, as you probably saw from the pictures, and he won’t be with us for this season absolutely.”
