Wednesday knocked out in shootout

Wednesday’s FA Cup run for this season ended at the first hurdle in a third round penalty shootout defeat at Coventry on Saturday evening.

Anthony Musaba’s 94th minute equaliser made the score 1-1 to take the tie into extra time and then, with no further score in those 30 minutes, it went to penalties with the home side winning 4-3.

Josh Windass converted the first spot kick, Victor Torp made it 1-1 and then Barry Bannan fired home to make it 2-1 to Wednesday.

Keeper Pierce Charles went full length to save from Jake Bidwell to give us an early advantage but that was immediately lost when Jamal Lowe shot high and wide.

Josh Eccles and Jack Rudoni both scored for Coventry, with Shea Charles converting in between for the Owls, and the scores were locked at 3-3.

However, Olaf Kobacki then saw his kick saved by Oliver Dovin and that left Norman Bassette to step up and shoot past Charles to end our hopes of progressing to round four.

With Danny Rohl shuffling his pack for the cup tie, Wednesday struggled to cause the home side many problems in the first half.

In fact, we failed to have any efforts at goal in the opening 45 minutes and Coventry went in one-up at the break, Liam Kitching firing home on 26 minutes in a crowded penalty box after we had again failed to clear properly from another set piece, this time a corner.

Brandon Thomas-Asante could have made matters worse for us, missing two good headed chances to increase Coventry’s lead either side of half time.

On 55 minutes came our first effort on goal, Michael Ihiekwe heading over the top when he should have at least hit the target.

However, Pierce Charles came to the rescue at the other end a minute later with an excellent double save, denying Ellis Simms and then Torp from the rebound.

The introduction of Bannan midway through the second period brought an immediate improvement to our attacking play and creativity and his 20-yarder forced a tipover save out of Dovin.

With four minutes left, Coventry looked to have clinched victory when Bobby Thomas turned the ball home from a corner but it was ruled out, seemingly harshly, for a foul on keeper Charles.

And three minutes into added time Wednesday were level, Windass headed down from Shea Charles’ corner and Musaba converted from close range.

With the game then going into extra time, we thought we hade gone ahead early on when Musaba was on the spot again from Bannan’s low cross but was ruled offside.

Wednesday were looking the stronger side at this stage and Kobacki sent Lowe clear into the box but he blasted over the top and with no further goals it set up the lottery of penalties … culminating in Wednesday’s exit from this season’s FA Cup.
