Reading FC exit FA Cup with extra time defeat to Burnley

Reading advanced to extra time against Championship promotion-chasing Burnley, but they lost 3-1 at the Select Car

Leasing Stadium and were eliminated from the FA Cup in Round Three.

Less than 8,000 spectators watched as Lyle Foster gave the Clarets the lead in the second half. However, just a few

minutes later, Lewis Wing’s long-range goal slid between custodian Vlad Hladky’s body to force extra time.

They advanced to Round Four with to goals by Zian Flemming, a regular in the first squad, in the first and second

periods of extra time.

In the lead-up to the match, Noel Hunt made it clear that he would field a formidable team, and he did. Scott Parker

made 11 changes for Burnley, who are currently ranked second in the Championship, compared to just three changes

for the team that drew 1-1 at Charlton Athletic last week.

Despite making eleven changes, Burnley came out of the traps looking like they were contenders for promotion in the

Championship. Perhaps Parker’s team was unlucky not to lead going into halftime because Lucas Koelosho and Lyle

Foster in particular were a regular source of worry in the Reading backline.

It took three minutes for the first effort, Foster firing over the bar, and nine minutes for the first shot on target from

Koleosho. Reading did grow into the game, particularly from the half-hour mark onwards, and Tyler Bindon saw a

big chance go begging as he rose highest from Lewis Wing’s cross only to head over the crossbar. David Button did

not have a serious shot to save until five minutes from the break, palming Foster’s effort from the edge of the box

away for a corner.

Reading continued the second half as they ended the first, with much more of the ball and with a dangerous streak in

them. The Clarets forced Button into a save through Koleosho, but the Royals rallied and could have taken the lead

on a couple of occasions. Balls into the box from Wing and Savage caused trouble throughout and both Smith and

Knibbs had chances from inside the box blocked at source.

Burnley seized the lead after a corner was recycled and Foster was there to turn past Button from the low cross,

which went somewhat against the second half’s flow of play. The advantage, however, was short-lived as Wing

attempted a long-range shot and Hladky allowed the effort to squirm past his body and into the net.

The referee signalled extra-time after calling time after reading through a number of players in an attempt to

discover a late winner. Ten minutes into extra time, Flemming, who scored the game-winning goal in last week’s

Lancashire Derby victory over Blackburn Rovers, was brought on to put the visitors back ahead after a good Burnley

move.
