Plans submitted for world-class Acoustics Building in Crescent Salford’s innovation zone

Plans have been submitted for a new cutting-edge Acoustics Building, which will provide world-class research facilities to Crescent Salford’s innovation zone.

The 1,300m2 facility would house the University of Salford’s Acoustics Department’s research, commercial, and teaching activities, marking the second stage in Crescent Innovation’s development after work began on Salford Rise in September.

Crescent Innovation, proposed by the Crescent partnership, which includes the University of Salford, Salford City Council, and ECF – a joint venture between Homes England, Legal & General, and Muse – will build on existing research and development capabilities to drive additional economic growth in Salford and facilitate stronger links between academia, research, and business.

Morgan Sindall Construction has been recruited as the main contractor for the Acoustics Building, having previously worked with the university on the development of several innovative learning settings, including the North of England Robotics Innovation Centre.

Salford’s world-class acoustic facilities are built to fulfill the highest technical demands as well as measuring standards. Each area will be backed by one of the world’s largest acoustics research groups, as well as hands-on experience from specialist technical staff.

In keeping with the most recent sustainability requirements, the all-electric building will aim for a BREEAM grade of ‘Excellent’ and will use low-energy and low-carbon technologies to reduce energy usage and the building’s carbon footprint.

The facility will be located on Lissadel Street, a former industrial site in the Crescent Innovation district, which is 29 acres north of the university’s Peel Park campus.

If planning permission is obtained, work is expected to begin on-site in the summer of 2025 and end in the spring of 2027.

Professor Trevor Cox, Director of Acoustics at the University of Salford, stated, “Sound is essential to life, and the work we will do in this building will have an impact on the public.” For example, we may collaborate with industry and the government to lessen the health risks associated with noise. The new laboratories will assist us in forging a better sounding future.”

Max Bentham, Development Director at ECF, stated, “The rehabilitation of this currently underutilized sector will contribute to Salford’s global reputation for industry and innovation. This cutting-edge facility will benefit not only the University of Salford’s students and employees, but also the local community and region as it draws firms and investment. Crescent Innovation’s facilities will be world-class hubs for innovation and collaboration, bringing education and business together to shape Salford’s future.”

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett stated, “I am delighted to see that the planning application for the new University of Salford Acoustics Building, which will sit at the heart of the Crescent Innovation zone, has now been submitted.” This is an excellent step forward for the University’s world-class research and a tribute to our common desire for a more sustainable future, as it will establish a standard for environmental performance.

“It is great to see such positive development momentum across Crescent Innovation, following the completion of the North of England Robotics Innovation Centre and the ongoing work to deliver Salford Rise, a new green elevated walkway that will improve connectivity between Crescent Innovation and surrounding communities. These improvements are critical for fostering innovation, increasing our local economy, and creating a greener, more prosperous Salford.”

Steven Gregory, Morgan Sindall Construction’s area director for the North West, stated, “Over the last few years, it has been our privilege to deliver several world-class new facilities for the staff and students at this brilliant university, and we are thrilled to be renewing our relationship on this brilliant new project.”

“Through its investment in its campus, the University has proved that it is committed to leveraging tomorrow’s technology to help improve the world around us, something Morgan Sindall wholeheartedly embraces. We are very happy to accompany them on their trip.”

Crescent Innovation is part of the Crescent partnership’s £2.5 billion, 240-acre Crescent Salford masterplan, which will bring together industry, education, and the local community by building over 3,000 homes, 1 million square feet of office, retail, and leisure space, a new multi-model transportation hub, and vast areas of greenspace.
