2 players who could follow Harry Souttar out of Sheffield United in 2025
After being relegated from the top division the previous season, Sheffield United is fighting for an instant return to the Premier League and may be on track to achieve so.
The Blades have established themselves as one of four teams that seem most set on securing an automatic promotion slot, along with Leeds United, Burnley, and Sunderland, after achieving some good performances in the Championship this season.
Only half of those clubs will, of course, be able to place in the top two, and the two that don’t make it will have to play in the playoffs at the end of the season.
The South Yorkshire team lost to Burnley on Boxing Day and was held to a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion before losing at the Stadium of Light on New Year’s Day, which put a halt to the Blades’ promotion campaign over the Festive Period.
In the meantime, Harry Souttar, a defender who had made an impression at Bramall Lane during what was meant to be a season-long loan from Premier League Leicester City, had to return to his parent club due to an achilles tendon rupture sustained during the Clarets match.
After Souttar’s departure, Football League World examines two more Blades players who might be leaving the team in 2025:
Louie Marsh
Although Louie Marsh, a product of the United academy, hasn’t played much in the Championship this season, he did score for the South Yorkshire team when he was included in Chris Wilder’s starting lineup for the EFL Cup match against League One Wrexham in August.
Marsh was brought into the lineup again after his goal that evening helped the Blades go to round two, but Wilder’s team lost 1-0 to Barnsley, their rivals.
He hasn’t played much in the Championship since, even after teammate midfielder Ollie Arblaster suffered a season-ending injury during his team’s triumph over Sheffield Wednesday in the Steel City Derby back in November.
In Wilder’s hierarchy, the 20-year-old is obviously beneath someone like Sydie Peck and Tom Davies, which is detrimental to the starlet’s growth.
Due to a lack of opportunities at Bramall Lane, Marsh went out on loan to Doncaster Rovers last season, and it is clear that he needs a similar move away during the current transfer window.
Rhian Brewster
Forward Rhian Brewster, who joined the Blades from Premier League powerhouse Liverpool in 2020 for a reported £23.5 million, is another player who may be leaving this year.
Brewster has fallen short of expectations and has never scored more than four goals in a season since they agreed in South Yorkshire.
Despite scoring the game’s only goal in the Blades’ 1-0 triumph over Millwall last month, the striker has once again struggled this season.
Given the competition for promotion, Wilder might wish to keep the 24-year-old at Bramall Lane for the time being, but it is unlikely that the team will offer him a contract extension as his current one expires next summer.
Since the striker is still having trouble scoring goals, it’s possible that he will depart the Blades on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.
