Wing-back ‘ready to Czech out’ as Frank Lampard contemplates first transfer as Coventry City boss

Latest Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as the new Sky Blues manager aims to enhance his squad before the January window closes.

Coventry City are reportedly interested in signing Nigerian wing-back Ahmad Ghali in January, but face competition from Ipswich Town and Italian clubs.

The 24-year-old plays for Czech club Slovan Liberec and has made 19 appearances this season, mostly as a right wing-back. According to the Africa Foot website via Sport Witness, Ghali, a versatile winger, is being pursued by clubs in England and Italy, including the Sky Blues. AC Monza of Serie A is also thought to be in the running.

Frank Lampard, the club’s new manager, has yet to make his first signing. Coventry owner Doug King is famously secretive about potential acquisitions, so it’s unclear what deals are in the works.

According to the Africa Foot source, both top-flight Ipswich and the Sky Blues “would consider recruiting” him during this window. Transfermarkt rates Ghali at €850,000, which Lampard and Co. can easily afford. However, no cost is mentioned.

Sports Witness adds Ghali has been with Slovan Liberec since 2022 and has a contract that runs until 2027 after signing an extension last summer, although both the club and the player are open to offers.

When asked lately if he knew which parts of the club he wanted to strengthen and how many new faces he wanted to bring in, Lampard told CoventryLive: “I agree with positions, but not in terms of numbers. There are various elements of the team that appear to be lacking, such as wingers who are currently injured. If we can assist the squad, we will do so.”
