West Brom: Tony Mowbray claim made as club close in on Carlos Corberan successor.
West Brom did approach Tony Mowbray about a return to The Hawthorns, but the former manager did not believe it was the ‘appropriate job’ for him at the time.
The Baggies have been looking for a new head coach since Carlos Corberan chose to leave for Valencia on Christmas Eve. Sporting director Andrew Nestor has been driving the search, and it looks Albion have found their man, with former BSC Young Boys manager Raphael Wicky set to take over.
Tony Mowbray turned down West Brom return
That occurred after a thorough search, and TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook said that Mowbray was considered, but the 61-year-old was not interested in the position. “It appears that Raphael Wicky will be the new WBA boss. In addition to Rene Hake, I understand the Baggies spoke with former manager Tony Mowbray, who did not view this as the proper job to return to. Mowbray’s last employment in football was with Birmingham, however he was forced to step down owing to health difficulties, and the Blues subsequently hired Chris Davies as their new head coach.
If Albion had been able to re-sign Mowbray, it was likely that he would have been well-received by the fans, given he had led the Baggies to victory since taking over in 2006. Albion won the Championship title in 2008 under Mowbray’s leadership, but it wasn’t just about the results; he built a stylish, aggressive team that was a joy to watch, even if they were relegated from the Premier League after their promotion.
West Brom will hope Raphael Wicky can inspire promotion push
In truth, it would’ve been a surprise if Albion had turned to Mowbray, but it makes sense that they spoke to him, as he has a good CV at this level, and he obviously knows the club well.
But Wicky’s hiring, which now appears unavoidable, is thrilling, as he inherits a squad in good shape after Corberan’s excellent work over the years. While the focus is on the FA Cup this weekend, Albion are in the play-off spots, and there will be hope that they can secure a return to the top flight, albeit a challenging assignment.
