Sky Sports Philippe Clement sack: Sky Sports share ‘incredible’ Rangers update.

Gordon Duncan of Sky Sports has provided a “incredible” update on the status of under-fire Rangers manager Philippe Clement.

The Belgian manager’s future is on the line after Rangers suffered another terrible away performance, losing points at Dundee FC. The Gers drew 1-1 at Den Park and now have 41 points from 21 games, 15 points behind league leaders Celtic. Duncan spoke with Sky Sports about Clement’s job prospects and how fans reacted. Duncan stated, “Last night, the last we heard from him (Clement), he said he believed he had the Rangers board’s full support. You wake up this morning seeking for grounds to contradict him, and there aren’t any, according to us (Sky Sports) understand, in fact more than that, Philippe Clement is at the Rangers training centre this morning. He’s going to take training as normal, so nothing imminent in that regard which may disappoint Rangers fans but that is the reality this morning.”

“Last night was just another disappointing road performance; it’s four away games in a row that Rangers have failed to win all three points. Over the course of the season, the Rangers have won only three of their 11 road games. When you look at things individually, it’s entirely acceptable and understandable for Rangers to lose points away to Motherwell, St Mirren, Hibs, or Dundee, but doing so on a regular basis is plainly too much for these Rangers fans.

He then went on to say: “It’s incredible how quickly football changes, especially in this city. One week ago we stood here in Glasgow and we spoke about rangers beating Celtic 3-0 here at Ibrox, it was the day after that game, they swept Celtic aside, there was a real confidence emanating from the Rangers fans, yes it was too late to do anything about the title but it was 11 points that day (the gap to Celtic) all of a sudden. 15 points and the picture could not look any worse.”

Philippe Clement unlikely to keep the Rangers job in January

Despite his claims of having “200%” of the board’s support, the former AS Monaco manager appears more unlikely to be in the job by the end of January. While his tenure as Gers manager began brightly with a Scottish League Cup success last season, four Old Firm Derby losses in 2023/24 (including a Scotting Cup Final) served as the first nail in the coffin. Rangers have had a dismal season, and despite the argument that injuries haven’t helped his cause, the consensus among fans appears to be that it’s time to move on from Clement.

If Rangers do part ways with the former Belgian international, it will most likely be shortly so that the current management has time to locate some players while the transfer window is still open. Peter O’Rourke, Senior Correspondent for Football Insider, has mentioned Steve Cooper as one of the front-runners for the post if Clement leaves.
