In a season in which Leicester has been hammered and bruised, the FA Cup provides a glimmer of hope for rebirth. After weeks of angst, they needed some free-scoring therapy. Five defeats in a row, with two goals and 14 surrendered, threatened to turn Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first Premier League job into misery. He saw a blueprint for how his Foxes might look and feel here, staring through the fog, his yells turning to icicles before they crossed the touchline: high turnovers, sharp on the counter, threatening down the wing, and clinical, as if he were on his 384-goal joyride on grass.

This was Leicester’s first six-goal haul since 2013. The King Power Stadium resembled an operating theatre as they ripped apart an in-form QPR with gleeful abandon, albeit this performance was far from flawless, especially for an error-prone Harry Winks. Van Nistelrooy was quite happy. ‘A performance in which you can score six goals is always fantastic,’ he remarked. “I appreciated the third goal the most. It was a terrific move with lots of movement and coordination that we sought to improve. It’s very satisfying when things work out like that.

‘I feel like we’re in a process of improving and seeing things in a different light.’ Detractors will claim it’s only QPR, but they’re no tiny fry. Their recent history has been marked by upheaval and revolving doors, but in Marti Cifuentes, they have found a guy who speaks to their hearts. Prior to this game, they had lost one of their previous eleven. Leicester made a flying start as James Justin slipped home from Facundo Buonanotte’s eighth-minute free-kick, leaving QPR’s defence perplexed by the mist. However, 10 minutes later, following Winks’ bad pass, Jonathan Varane levelled with a powerful effort from 25 yards. Leicester quickly re-established their dominance, scoring two goals in quick succession.
