ISAIAH Jones described his move to Luton as the “perfect move” after his departure from Middlesbrough was confirmed.
Jones has joined the Hatters after Luton and Boro reached an agreement worth up to £5 million for the winger, who has been on the margins at the Riverside this season.
Luton are now without a manager following the departure of Rob Edwards this week, but the club’s recruitment team drove the Jones signing, and the uncertainty in the dugout had no bearing on the decision.
“I think it’s the perfect move for both parties,” Jones told reporters.
“The project here, the club’s recent success, and the opportunity to return to the south all appeal to me.
“This season has been difficult for Luton so far, but there is a really quality squad here, and I aim to put a smile on the fans’ faces.
“I am direct, skilled, and I enjoy giving the audience something to applaud about. I can’t wait to get started!”
Jones made 149 appearances for Boro after joining the club from Tooting and Mitcham in London’s non-league system.
Jones was another success story for Martin Carter, Boro’s head of academy recruitment, who also brought Djed Spence to the Riverside before selling him to Tottenham for a large fee.
Jones made his debut for the Boro under Neil Warnock before contributing significantly to the club’s early success under Chris Wilder.
He scarcely appeared in Michael Carrick’s first season in charge, although he later opened out about his mental health struggles after losing seven family members in a year.
The 25-year-old re-established himself in Boro’s squad last season, and his performances earned him a new and improved deal in April. However, he lost his spot in the team to promising Liverpool loanee Ben Doak this season, and it was believed that a move this month would benefit everyone involved.
Boro are now assessing their options for potentially replacing Jones, as well as keenly monitoring Doak’s status in light of Premier League interest in a permanent contract for the Scottish international.
