Blackburn Rovers are set to sign Plymouth Argyle’s experienced midfielder Adam Forshaw.
According to Alan Nixon, Forshaw will come in as cover after Stoke City recalled Lewis Baker earlier this week.
Rovers are soaring high in the Championship, with only one point separating them from the play-off positions.
With Blackburn looking for a couple of recruits to help their Championship play-off drive, John Eustace stated this week that his squad would benefit from the “lift” brought by a new signing. Now, the immensely experienced Forshaw appears to be Rovers’ first signing of the January transfer season.
Forshaw could be a valuable addition for Blackburn
Forshaw’s acquisition should provide crucial experience and skill to Eustace’s squad.
The 33-year-old has had a lengthy and accomplished career in the English Football League, having played for Brentford, Wigan, Middlesbrough, Leeds, Norwich, and Plymouth.
His time at Middlesbrough and Leeds included brief Premier League appearances.
Adam Forshaw Stats by League (As per FBRef) | |||
---|---|---|---|
Competition | Games | Goals | Assists |
Championship | 158 | 3 | 7 |
League One | 89 | 11 | 9 |
Premier League | 69 | – | 2 |
The midfielder has made 16 appearances this season for the Championship’s bottom team Plymouth, but Blackburn will be hoping he can come in and impact their squad while also potentially taking on a leadership role in the dressing room.
Forshaw offers a hard and aggressive mentality to the midfield, making him ideal for keeping standards high within a club.
Forshaw hasn’t made 30 league appearances in a single season in any division in over six years, but if he’s moving to Ewood Park to provide cover, as Nixon reports, Eustace and his side are unlikely to be concerned.
Rovers already have some solid options in the middle of the pitch, with Sondre Tronstad and Lewis Travis having successful seasons in Blackburn’s midfield.
The loss of Lewis Baker would have been devastating, but with the impending signing of Forshaw, Blackburn appear to have acted fast and well to mitigate the impact of Baker’s exit.
Blackburn will be dreaming of a Premier League return
Despite the fact that the Championship season is still a few months away, Blackburn will undoubtedly be hoping to return to the top flight.
Rovers are in their 13th season since last playing in the Premier League at Ewood Park, but Eustace’s side has put themselves in a strong position to return to the top tier via the play-offs.
A run of five league games without a win has pushed them down the table slightly, but they remain firmly in the play-off frame, despite being predicted to struggle before the season began.
Regardless, they must not remain still in January and let their competition to strengthen around them, or their season may go away.
