Huddersfield Town have major advantage over Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham in promotion fight
Huddersfield Town have accrued 47 points from 24 matches this season
Don Goodman, a Sky Sports analyst, maintains that Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham, Huddersfield Town’s rivals
for promotion, “must be concerned” by the Terriers’ strong recent performance.
With a 1-0 victory over second-place Wycombe on Tuesday night, Town extended their League One winning streak to
15 games. With one game remaining, the Terriers’ lead over the automatic promotion spots was reduced to four
points.
Huddersfield Town players celebrates at the final whistle after their win at WycombeWith the win over the Chairboys, Town now has 47 points from 24 games, while Wycombe and Wrexham have 51
points from 25 games. Matt Bloomfield’s team currently holds the second automatic promotion spot because their
goal differential is four goals better than the Welsh team’s. Since the FA Cup weekend prevents the promotion rivals
from playing in the league on Saturday, the Terriers have the opportunity to close the gap to one point when they
play third-from-bottom Shrewsbury Town away from home.
Additionally, with the Terriers having now played both Wycombe and Wrexham away from home, the pair still have
to make the trip to the John Smith’s Stadium, with the Terriers hosting the Red Dragons on March 4 and the
Chairboys on March 22.
Goodman acknowledged that Town have put themselves in a strong position to make a push for the top two in the
second half of the campaign. He told Plejmo.com: “[They’ve] got to play both Wycombe and Wrexham at home,
which means they’re very much still in the automatic promotion race.
“Huddersfield have put such a good run together that Wycombe and Wrexham must be concerned. It’s all to play for.”
According to Betfred, Town’s promotion chances have increased to 50 per cent following their victory in midweek.
However, the bookmaker currently lists the Terriers as the third favourites to go up, behind leaders Birmingham City
and Wycombe.
Robert Ford of Betfred stated: “Huddersfield Town’s League One winning streak of 15 games has not only improved
their own prospects of promotion, but it has also made Birmingham City’s appear all but certain.
“The Terriers’ chances of promotion have increased to 50% from 47.6% prior to [Tuesday’s] match against
Wycombe, while the Blues now have a 98% probability.
However, following their loss at [Adams Park], the Chairboys’ prospects dropped from 66.7% to 60%.
“Wrexham is now the fourth favourite to be promoted from League One, and their chances of getting promoted have
also decreased from 50% to 47.6%.”
