‘This time’ – Shane Duffy sends Brighton warning ahead of Norwich City FA Cup clash

Former Brighton defender looks forward to an FA Cup reunion.

Following the FA Cup third round draw, many Brighton supporters instantly thought of Shane Duffy.

The Seagulls will play Championship team Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday, where they will meet a former defender.

The Ireland international made 150 appearances for Brighton over seven seasons, joining from Blackburn Rovers in 2016.

His defensive combination with captain Lewis Dunk helped Albion win promotion to the Premier League, and the defender continued to play an important role as Brighton established themselves in the top level under Chris Hughton and subsequently Graham Potter.

Duffy departed on loan for Celtic in 2020, then Fulham in 2023, before permanently joining Norwich in 2023. Much has changed at Brighton since Duffy was a regular, but the 33-year-old is still a tremendously popular character among the supporters.

“I was buzzing [when I saw the draw] because I haven’t really had a chance to play them yet,” the 33-year-old remarked, according to Pink Un. “I was on loan at Fulham and couldn’t play against them.

“I have a lot of excellent friends there, and I talk with nice folks behind the scenes on a regular basis. I’m quite thrilled to see them, and I believe it will be a nice cup tie.

Duffy reflected on his tenure at Brighton, saying, “I was probably the most consistent for three or four years at least. It’s a club I like and owe much to. They prepared me for my career, and it’s always wonderful to play against your former side – but this time, I want Norwich to win.

“I have a wonderful relationship to that club. The supporters have always been quite kind; they have been courteous, and I have been respectful of them.

“They’ve seen that I give everything to the club, which is exactly what every fan wants. “I thought it was the most successful period of my career.”

Duffy has made 26 Championship appearances for Johannes Hoff Thorup’s Norwich this season, but he is enthused about the potential of a cup run against his previous team.

“I really adore it. How could you not adore it? The FA Cup provides you great occasions, therefore let’s attempt to plan a run together. We’re at home, and we know we’re comfortable there. “We’re all about upsets, and everyone enjoys one.”
