The January transfer market is officially open, and Sunderland appear to be focussing on the midfield at the moment.
Regis Le Bris has done wonders for Sunderland thus far, and the Black Cats are still in contention for the crown as the new year begins. There are several areas where Le Bris may want to strengthen the Sunderland squad, with a new striker now at the top of the supporters’ wish list. However, it appears that Sunderland should be wary of Premier League approaches for its finest players, since one star player could be leaving this month whether they like it or not.
Sunderland win race for Enzo Le Fee despite Lille interest
Enzo Le Fee, the Roma midfielder who previously played for Le Bris at FC Lorient, is currently the focus of all Sunderland rumours. Real Betis and Sevilla’s interest in the Frenchman has recently waned, allowing Sunderland to step forward and try to persuade him to relocate to England. Le Bris specifically requested the recruitment of Le Fee, but it was believed the midfielder was more eager to return to his birthplace, with Lille also interested. However, it appears that Sunderland has won the race for the Le Fee, and he will join on loan with the option to buy the midfielder in the future, which might become a need if the Black Cats get promoted.
Le Fee joined Roma for £19 million last summer, but has fallen out of favour under Claudio Ranieri at the Stadio Olimpico.
Sunderland looking to South Africa for a midfielder, with Thalente Mbatha a target. Sunderland appear to be eager to strengthen their midfield, with Thalente Mbatha also linked with a January move. The South African international now plays for Orlando Pirates in his home country, and Sunderland scouts are reported to be keeping a close eye on his development. However, Mbatha’s agency has downplayed the claims, and the Pirates are unlikely to let him depart anytime soon.
