Sunderland ‘agree’ stunning Enzo Le Fee transfer as key details of move emerge

Enzo Le Fee, a Roma midfielder, is about to join Sunderland on a season-long loan, as Regis Le Bris makes his first January signing.

Sunderland have reportedly agreed to sign Enzo Le Fee from Roma. The 24-year-old, who joined the Serie A club for £19 million from Rennes in July, is ready to reunite with Regis Le Bris on Wearside.

Le Fee and Le Bris collaborated at Lorient during the 2022/23 season, which many believe showcased the best of the former France international midfielder. In reality, Le Fee (41) produced the third-most open play and secondary chances in Ligue 1 that season, trailing only Lionel Messi (49) and Neymar (49).

And now, Le Fee and Le Bris are likely to reconnect at the Black Cats after an agreement was reached to bring him to the Stadium of Light. According to Fabrizio Romano, Sunderland are likely to sign Le Fee on a loan basis with a buy clause. It is alleged that Le Bris was ‘crucial’ in completing the deal.

He is expected to become Sunderland’s first January acquisition, and it seems like a significant show of purpose as Le Bris’ team strives for promotion back to the Premier League. The Black Cats are now fourth in the Championship, two points behind Sheffield United and Burnley, and three behind leaders Leeds.

Le Fee joined Lorient as an eight-year-old in 2008 and worked his way through the French club’s junior system until making his first-team debut in May 2019. He ended up being an essential member of the senior squad the next season, making 29 appearances, and this trend maintained for the next three years. However, in the summer of 2023, Le Fee left Lorient after 15 years and 142 appearances.

Despite interest from the Premier League and other European clubs, Le Fee remained in France and joined Rennes. He was a constant presence at Roazhon Park, although he only stayed for one season before joining Roma for a large fee.

However, since joining Roma in July, Le Fee has struggled to get consistent playing time. During his tenure in Rome, he has only started six matches and made ten appearances. He was an unused substitute in Sunday’s 2-0 derby victory over Lazio and last played against Sampdoria last month.
