“Put that around £2m” – Sheffield Wednesday handed Josh Windass transfer advice amid shock Santos FC interest

Sheffield Wednesday have been urged to rule out a bid for Josh Windass, who has emerged as the Brazilian club’s surprise transfer target.

The Owls are now contending for a top-six berth after a recent upturn under Danny Rohl, with just two losses in their past 11 league matches.

They are now 10th, but are just three points behind sixth-placed West Bromwich Albion, and their relentless push for play-off contention is led by star striker Windass.

Windass has already scored double figures this season and has five goals in his past six games, including a stunner from inside his own half in a 4-2 victory against Derby County on New Year’s Day, and his recent success has piqued the curiosity of other clubs.

Santos FC shows interest in Sheffield Wednesday’s Josh Windass.

Santos’ interest was initially revealed on Sunday evening by GIVEMESPORT’s Tom Bogert, who reported an offer for the 30-year-old via his X account. Undisclosed MLS teams are also known to be interested.

On Monday afternoon, Football League World exclusively disclosed that Wednesday had rejected a proposal from Santos, commanded by Windass’ former Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha. It is unclear if the Brazilian second-tier outfit would return with a new offer.

However, considering Windass’ form and the fact that his current contract, which was signed just last summer, is set to expire in the summer, he is expected to become a free agent.

Windass himself has spoken out on the intrigue and stopped short of entirely playing down a transfer. Via talkSPORT, Windass is cited as saying: “I used to work with him (Caixinha).

“To be honest, I was surprised when my agent phoned me this morning.

“I like playing wherever I go. Obviously, when your contract expires and so on, there will be chatter as there usually is.

“It came as a surprise this morning since I hadn’t talked or seen Pedro in a long time. But it is what it is; when you’re in shape, this kind of thing occurs.

“I’m not sure if any Hull-born players have played in Brazil to be honest, so we’ll have to see.”

Wednesday fans will be anxious to keep the striker, and it would be a massive blow for Danny Rohl to lose his main offensive weapon in the middle of the season as he looks to win a play-off spot.

With that in mind, FLW asked our resident Owls fan pundit, Patrick, whether he was afraid Windass may sign a pre-contract deal with Santos owing to the short period of time left on his indicated current terms and what type of money Wednesday should hold out for.

Patrick, who is apprehensive about losing Windass in the summer, feels the club should seek to price Caixhinha out of a reunion by asking a fee in the area of £2 million for his services.

“Regarding a fee for Josh Windass, it would be important to go high and try and fend off Santos in my opinion,” Patrick told Football League World.

“So if you put that around £2 million for an in-form Championship striker like himself, it really would not be outrageous. However, pitching it to a Brazilian second division team will most likely be too much for them.

“When I first heard about Santos, I immediately thought of Pele and how big a club they are, but they seem to have fallen on terrible times. I’d like to believe we could set a charge right now to deter Santos, but what’s most essential is that we sit down with Windass’ agent and attempt to extend his contract.

“It wasn’t smart business on our side to extend it by just a year in the summer, since it leaves it open a few months into the season, knowing he’ll be available in a few months.

“So, will he stay?” Given that he only stayed for a year in the summer, Santos is drawn to something new at this point in his career, and this could be his last chance to accept such an offer.

“I would fear that we will lose him in the summer for free and that wouldn’t surprise me because it’s kind of the norm under (Dejphon, owner) Chansiri that we let players slip through our fingers.”
