“Maybe there comes a moment” Danny Röhl issues hopeful Sheffield Wednesday assessment

Right now, Sheffield Wednesday has a place on the fringes of the Championship play-off discussion.

The Owls have had a successful Christmas period, coming within a game or two of finishing in the top six for several

weeks. The disappointment of a home draw against Millwall was heightened when it was realised that a victory

would have moved them up to eighth place, one point outside of the play-off spots.

Wednesday salvaged a point thanks to a late Gabriel Otegbayo equaliser but looked the better of the two sides across

an afternoon that saw defensive errors cost them dearly. It’s become a repeat headache for the Owls, who are the

division’s sixth-highest goalscorers with 38 – but have seen only four teams conceded more than their 40.

Speaking after the Lions draw, Wednesday manager Danny Röhl offered an honest view on where his side are at. “I

am all in all very happy with my team,” he said. “From the last six games we took 11 points, just one defeat, we are

hard to beat. From the last 11 just two defeats. It is all good but again you look to the table, you look to the result you

think ‘Oh, just a small step we win and we are so close now to where we want to go.’ This feeling is in the locker room

today.”

After a gruelling battle for last-day survival the previous season, Wednesday gradually reduced the gap to cross the

drop line for the first time with two games remaining. They celebrated surviving by three points after three straight

victories at Blackburn, home against West Brom, and Sunderland. Röhl can see that late dash to their desired

destination occurring again if they can maintain their form.

“We talked a lot about these situations where we could cross the line last year, but we didn’t,” he added. However,

there may come a time in the coming weeks when we take this action. However, we need to make improvements in a

few areas, and there are some things I don’t want to see from my defence squad. Naturally, I believe that everyone

returns home knowing that we have good intentions, excellent possibilities, and good chances. We want to win

games, though.
