Coventry City are allegedly in negotiations with Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers about a potential January transfer for defender Liam Kitching. Kitching, a centre defender who joined City from Barnsley at the close of the summer transfer window in 2023, appeared in 32 games for the Sky Blues last season and was sent off three times, notably against Rovers on the last day.
Kitching has only made eight league appearances this season, under Mark Robins and then Frank Lampard; he came on as a late substitute on Boxing Day as the club cruised to a 4-0 win over Plymouth Argyle, but he played 90 minutes in the dramatic collapse at Norwich City last time out, his first full game under Lampard.
Kitching, who cost the club around £4 million, has played second fiddle to center backs Bobby Thomas, Luis Binks, and Joel Latibeaudiere. Blackburn is looking to add defensive cover this month after losing Harry Pickering to a knee injury at Millwall before Christmas.
According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Rovers, who bought veteran Kyle McFadzean in January after his contract with the Sky Blues was terminated by mutual consent, have put out feelers and contacted City about a prospective loan move for Kitching this month. However, their leader, John Eustace, confirmed that no incoming business was close.
“Nothing at the moment,” Eustace answered. “I know the club is working extremely hard to bring some players in, so maybe we can keep doing so and see where it takes us. I’m confident no one will be in before the weekend.”
