£69k-a-week: Fabrizio Romano reveals whether Sunderland will have to pay Enzo Le Fee’s Roma wages.
Sunderland are not big spenders under Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, particularly in terms of pay, with Dan Ballard earning a reputed £25,000 per week.
Sunderland were formerly one of the Premier League’s biggest spenders. Nowadays, this is not the case. Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has calmed the ship since taking over as primary shareholder in 2022, with Sunderland becoming much more meticulous in their expenditures. According to Capology, Dan Ballard is the club’s current highest-paid player, earning £25,000 a week. While this is a significant sum of money, it pales in comparison to what Leeds United, Burnley, and Sheffield United pay some of their players. Though Enzo Le Fee’s arrival at Sunderland obviously contradicts the club’s pay policy. According to reports, Le Fee has agreed to join Sunderland, and fans are waiting for the team to make an official announcement.
Fabrizio Romano all but confirmed the move on Wednesday night. Now, the Italian journalist has shed some light on the deal, and whether or not Sunderland will be paying his Roma salary.
Sunderland set to cover Enzo Le Fee’s Roma wages
Roma paid £19 million to sign Le Fee from Rennes last summer. Although he’s been a flop since, appearing only six times in Serie A and now departing for the Championship, he still earns a large wage. According to Capology, Le Fee’s weekly wage at Roma is a whopping €82,000 (£69,000), which is far beyond Sunderland’s budget. But it appears Louis-Dreyfus is making an exception for Elvedi. Romano made the following announcement: “Enzo Le Fee travels to England later today for medical tests at Sunderland, as #SAFC will cover full salary until June.”
Sunderland’s precise cost for Enzo Le cost. Given that Roma paid £19 million for Le Fee just a few months ago, it’s reasonable to think that Claudio Ranieri’s side will want the same, if not more, for the player if they sell in 2025. Romano estimates that fee at €23 million. According to another report from Sky Sports Italy, Sunderland will have to pay €23 million to sign Le Fee if promoted, which equals to £19.23 million. That would make Le Fee the most expensive player Sunderland has ever signed. It’s an enticing prospect, but first Le Fee must demonstrate his ability to perform in England’s challenging Championship level.
