100th Anniversary of Sheffield United’s FA Cup Final Win Over Cardiff
It is appropriate that the FA Cup Third Round matchup between Bramall Lane and Cardiff City this evening occurs in 2025. Sheffield United last won the trophy against Cardiff at (the Old) Wembley Stadium a century ago this year. I will do my best to describe one of the most memorable days in Blades’ history, even though neither I nor anyone else whose name isn’t listed in a Guinness World Record book can claim to recall the game.
The Cup Run
If it seems like a long time since United won the oldest football competition in the world, it is?100 years. Just ten years prior, in 1915, the Blades had won the FA Cup, marking the beginning of their successful run in the early 20th century. An equally historic victory in the final of the FA Cup prior to the competition’s WWI suspension.
Blades vs. Corinthian in the First Round
At Bramall Lane, the Blades easily defeated amateur team Corinthian 5-0. Four of the Blades’ five goals were scored by Harry Johnson, their striker. The other goal was scored by Blades winger Tommy Boyle in front of 38,167 spectators.
Blades vs. The Wednesday in the Second Round
Before they publicly acknowledged that their name was Sheffield, that is. In the second round, “The Wednesday” was a Steel City Derby. On January 31, 1925, the game was played in spite of the rain that continued all night and into the morning. The rain “let off for half an hour” prior to kickoff, according to the Times’ coverage of the match. Despite, the rainfall threatening to create the first ever FA Cup tie decided by Water Polo, 40,256 fans turned up to Bramall Lane to watch the derby.
The final result was Sheffield United beating The Wednesday 3-2. The Blades had to fight back to win after The Wednesday?s Jimmy Trotter scored a brace within the first nine minutes of the game. Trotter?s goals would be the only goals conceded by the Blades on their 1925 FA Cup run. Tommy Sampy and George Green had got the Blades level by the 20th minute. Before Sampy would complete his own brace by scoring a minute after the restart. His goal allowing the Blades to down ?The Wednesday? and move on.
