Football League World exclusively disclosed on New Year’s Eve that Huddersfield Town and Wrexham are interested in Ryan Hardie of Plymouth Argyle.
Our sources claim that the two are prepared to spend up to £2 million for the Pilgrims number nine, who has only scored one goal this season.
Both teams have had trouble getting reliable goals from their forwards this season; players like Paul Mullin at Wrexham and Callum Marshall at Huddersfield, along with their other top-end options, have struggled to contribute consistently.
They may decide to use Hardie, who has 131 games played in League One and has scored 34 goals and supplied 15 assists, as he has a fair amount of experience.

Huddersfield Town backed to complete Ryan Hardie transfer coup
To get a Huddersfield viewpoint on the subject, we asked our resident Terriers analyst, Graham Rayner, for his opinion on whether the team ought to try to sign Hardie.
“It is a tricky one, because if he is the only striker we are signing, then he is not the answer,” Graeme said FLW in reference to this subject. We require several. There is absolutely no doubt about that.
Josh Koroma, who has been playing as a left-wing defender, is the only striker we have on staff that is worth playing.
Other than that, we have Danny Ward, who is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to an injury, and Callum Marshall, who is on loan. Freddie Ladapo is among our worst recent acquisitions and does not meet the standards we require.
“If he (Hardie) is one of two strikers who come in, then I would say, ‘Yes, great’.”
Rayner went on to say that while he appreciates what Hardie has to offer, he would be thrilled if the team could also sign a quick and clinical striker to go along with his possible contract.
“If we only sign Hardie, then I expect our lack of goals from up-front will continue,” the Huddersfield analyst said.
Huddersfield Town: Michael Duff should chase double striker deal in January
In truth, it is difficult to disagree with Rayner. While players like Marshall and Ward have performed reasonably well for the team, Huddersfield need greater goal contributions from their strikers if they are to mount a serious challenge for the top three.
They currently trail Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers, who have set the bar high in League One this season, by seven points.
A change up front could be the best course of action if they want to close this gap because it would be very advantageous to have strikers like Jay Stansfield at the Blues or Richard Kone at the Chairboys. At the moment, Louie Barry leads that pair in goals scored, and a promotion push requires that kind of output.
It would seem wise to sign a complimentary forward in addition to the Plymouth number nine, as Hardie might just be one piece of the puzzle.
