Colchester United boss Danny Cowley on Swindon defeat

Referee Tom Reeves’ contentious decision to award a stoppage-time penalty that condemned Colchester United to a

heartbreaking 3-2 loss at Swindon Town this afternoon left Danny Cowley angry.

After U’s captain Tom Flanagan was severely ruled to have handled in the box, George Cox scored from the penalty spot deep into time added to win the League Two match for the Robins.

Ellis Iandolo, a left-back for Colchester, was sent off after earning two yellow cards just before Swindon’s late winner in a hectic last few minutes.

Colchester lost the game in a difficult manner, and Cowley, the head coach of U, believed the spot-kick shouldn’t have been given.

“I can’t believe he gave it,” Cowley remarked.

“I don’t know what they’re seeing, but nobody appeals.

“As managers, we sacrifice an entire day to travel to MK Dons Stadium,” Howard Webb, the PGMOL chief, stated

plainly in reference to handball.

“We were way too picky as referees and gave way too many handballs last year,” he remarked.

“We were informed that referees were being given a clear directive, but they are still making these decisions,” he

added. “They were going to be much more aggressive with pulling and holding in the box, but we’re going to be much

more lenient with handballs in the box.”

“We’ve ended up losing a game we should never, ever lose,” Cowley said. “It was really disappointing for us.”

Colchester had appeared to be on their way to victory after Jack Payne’s penalty brace had cancelled out Ollie

Clarke’s early opener for Swindon. However, substitute Aaron Drinan levelled in the 82nd minute, and after Ellis

Iandolo was sent off for two bookable offences, Cox scored the game-winning goal to condemn the U’s to their first

loss in 12 games.

“At 70 minutes, we’re 2-1 up and look like a really good team and had good control in the game.

“I thought we played to that point with a lot of control. But I was disappointed that we lost our discipline and our emotional control.

They had the energy and the momentum, and we didn’t manage the game well enough, from that point on. “We

started to make some poor decisions and some poor executions, which meant that we lost the ball, the game got

open, and then they countered on us a couple of times. We then countered on them, and it became a bit basketball,

back and forth.” “We then gave a couple of fouls away, and that gave them a bit of pressure, and we just needed to

manage that period better.”
