A 14-year-old child was stabbed to death on a double-decker bus in what police called a “horrendous crime.”
At approximately 14:30 GMT, the deceased was killed while riding the 472 bus on Woolwich Church Street near the junction with the A205 South Circular Road in Woolwich, south-east London.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the adolescent died at the site shortly after London Ambulance Service paramedics and an air ambulance arrived.
Ch Supt Louise Sargent stated, “Our thoughts at the time are with the victim’s family and friends… “I can’t imagine what they’re going through right now.”
No arrests have been made, but a police cordon and road closures remain in effect.
The latest stabbing occurred just three months after another teenage boy was killed by a knife in Woolwich.
Daèjaun Campbell, 15, was fatally stabbed in September.
Following his murder, his mother, Jodie Taylor, appealed for the “senseless killing” to end.
Last year, homicide claimed the lives of 11 teenage males in London. This is the lowest amount since 2012, yet many argue that much more needs to be done.
Greenwich and Woolwich Labour MP Matthew Pennycook stated he was “deeply saddened that yet another young life has been lost in our community”.
The following comment was made: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.” “We need to take heed.”
Mark Rodney, CEO of Project Lifeline, an initiative that aims to combat teenage knife violence, condemned the tragedy as “another devastating blow for the community”.
“We need to take heed in what’s really happening in our communities and start seeking other channels to find solutions,” according to him.
“He is a youngster, a baby, and he has not lived his life yet.
“The community’s wounds from Daèjaun’s death have not yet healed.
“I believe two weeks ago, this young man was paying respect via flowers to a young man who passed in September, not knowing that today, he would be that person.
“Two weeks ago, he didn’t believe he was going to be in this situation today.”
Sir Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, stated, “My thoughts are with the family, friends, and wider community in Greenwich following the appalling fatal stabbing of a 14-year-old boy.”
“This tragic violence has no place in our city.
“I am in close contact with police leaders – an investigation is under way and local residents will see increased patrols in the local area.”
The London Ambulance Service said it dispatched an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a quick response car, an incident response officer and a paramedic from its tactical response team, as well as London’s air ambulance.
According to a spokeswoman, the adolescent was pronounced dead at the site “despite the best efforts of our crews”.
