Let’s pretend we live in an ideal world for a second. Here are 3 January transfers which Southampton would make if their situation allowed.
While it may be difficult to believe if you are a Southampton supporter, the January transfer window is currently open. In fact, it has been open for just under a week – I know, amazing, right?
So, certainly, Southampton will be active? Well, I don’t have an answer. The reason for this is that Southampton has no idea if they will be active.
Ivan Juric is set to participate in today’s January transfer window planning meeting. Yes, Southampton will begin to plan roughly a week after the window opens. But let’s grit our teeth for a second.
Here are three slightly ridiculous transfers, purely to pass the time till a strategy is implemented. Do not ask me for the lottery numbers if these come true.
3 January transfers Southampton would make in an ideal world
1. Evan Ferguson.
Evan Ferguson is available on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion. While Southampton were at the forefront of the discussion when the news broke, they have since faded.
Understandably, many big clubs want to sign Ferguson on loan until the conclusion of the season. He is a seasoned Premier League goalscorer who has fallen out of favour at the Amex Stadium.
Southampton are unlikely to be on the top of Ferguson’s priority list. But when has hope ever destroyed us? Oh, yes.
2. James Ward-Prowse.
Have you ever heard of an English midfielder named James Ward-Prowse?
Yes, he needs no introduction here. However, it is surprising that neither Nottingham Forest nor West Ham are interested in signing him this season.
With 344 Premier League appearances under his belt, it would have been amazing to see JWP return to St Marys Stadium, albeit on loan.
However, there are difficulties. Given that he has already played for two Premier League clubs this season (West Ham and Nottingham Forest), it may be tough to get past the criteria.
3. James McAtee
James McAtee has already scored a goal in the Champions League this season. The former Sheffield United loanee has shown remarkable ability to play out wide, but this season, despite Man City’s struggles, he has fallen out of favour.
So, what harm could Southampton cause by exploring a loan transfer for him? Southampton don’t have an abundance of imaginative wide players, after all.
