Norwich City: Sargent return boost for Canaries boss Thorup
Josh Sargent seems to be a new addition to Norwich City’s roster under head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup.
City are interested in signing Matej Jurasek from Slavia Prague in the January transfer window, although Sargent is set to return after missing 14 Championship games due to a groin injury.
If his return to team training goes well, the US international might play in this weekend’s FA Cup match against Brighton.
City rejected a £20 million plus offer from the MLS in the summer, despite Sargent’s 18 goal contributions in 26 league appearances spearheading last season’s play-off push.
The 24-year-old scored nine goals and assisted in 12 games this season before being declared out at the beginning of November.
“It feels like a new signing when he comes back into the team,” Thorup told reporters.
“He’s been out a lot, and I think his presence in the box is vital with the dominating style that we have today, especially over the past month or so, when I believe many of our games have been a game image that we genuinely desire.
“Having him accessible and as an alternative will benefit both the squad and his personality.
He’s a strong leader both on and off the field, so having him back will be good for us.
“Brighton is the plan, but things may change since we placed him in team training at the beginning of this week, and we’ll see how it goes.
If everything goes well, the objective is to give him some minutes against Brighton so that he is completely prepared for the next Championship game.”
Following a cup fixture against the Seagulls, City face promotion-chasing Sheffield United and Leeds, which will put a remarkable Coventry recovery to the test.
“We had the Middlesbrough game at home, where we did something a little bit similar, coming from behind, and still got a result,” Thorup told the press.
“We did that against QPR around Christmas, and we scored late in the game. Of course, Coventry was far greater than that.
“When I reflect on it and simply look at the guys. When I look at their behavior and emotions, I see guys that truly believe, are focused, and feel we can get as much out of circumstances as possible, rather than getting irritated when things don’t go our way.
That’s what I’m happy about because it’s something we can grow upon.”
