Matt Doherty admitted “sloppiness beat us” as Wolves crashed 3-0 at home to in-form Nottingham Forest.

First-half goals from Wolves old boy Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood, plus Taiwo Awoniyi’s strike at the death, saw Forest claim a sixth league victory on the spin to take them level on points with Arsenal in second.

But Doherty was defiant after the game, telling BBC Sport: “I think we created some good chances during the game. It didn’t feel like they created too much clear-cut, just three counter-attacks and us being a bit poor defensively and they punished us.

“They are in that type of moment where they are flying and things are going for them. We played well but sloppiness beat us in the end.

“We were creating chances and felt like the goal was coming. We knew how to get in and around them. On another day those chances go in. At no point were we thinking it’s not our day. It was disappointing to concede the last goal because that always makes things look worse.”

Forest keeper Matz Sels made a series of excellent saves to keep the hosts at bay in the first half, but Wolves were unable to maintain the pressure after the break as they crashed to a first defeat under now boss Vitor Pereira.

Discussing how things had changed since the arrival of Pereira last month, Doherty added: “He has brought his own way of playing, his own discipline and his own style, but all managers are different.

“We have a lot of Portuguese speaking players in the squad and he is probably able to get his message across better. I think he has brought a bit more discipline around the place and on the training ground.”

As for his role under the new boss, Doherty explained: “I have played wing-back and full-back for a long time, but I am enjoying the role I have now. I’m disappointed in myself for the second goal, I thought he was offside but you should never assume anything in football. Other than that I am enjoying the role. At the moment, things are going well.”
