Man United target Matheus Cunha set to sign new deal with Wolves, says Fabrizio Romano.
Manchester United have lost their last three Premier League games in a row without scoring a goal. In fact, in those three games, the strikers have made little attempts. Rasmus Hojlund still does not appear to be ready to lead the line, while Joshua Zirkzee has been a significant disappointment since his summer move, with an exit rumoured in January. Marcus Rashford was also trialled as a No 9 by Ruben Amorim, but the Mancunian has already announced his want to leave his boyhood club, with INEOS attempting to unload him in January window.
Due to PSR concerns, the head coach already knows it would be difficult to land his top targets and hence, he was open to alternatives with Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers impressing the Portuguese.
Cunha has impressed! Amorim When the two sides met, he went rings around the United backline, demonstrating how to operate as a No 10 in a 3-4-3 system with his brilliant movement and passing, which put the United players to shame. To cap it off, the Brazilian scored directly from a corner and assisted on the second goal. His performance was so impressive that United’s coach requested INEOS to try to sign him. The 25-year-old has scored ten goals this season, more than any other United striker, and has also provided four assists.
The West Midlands club had paid €50 million for his services in 2023, and with Cunha’s contract valid until 2027, it would have been a difficult arrangement to negotiate, perhaps costing the Red Devils €80 million. A new deal is on the cards. However, Fabrizio Romano has now put cold water on United’s hopes, stating Wolves have verbally agreed to a contract extension that will not only extend his deal but also increase his earnings. “The Wolves have agreed to a new contract with Matheus Cunha! A verbal agreement has been reached for the Brazilian star to extend his contract with an improved remuneration. “Despite interest from multiple teams, Cunha plans to sign as soon as official documents are verified and accepted.Almost there,” Romano wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
This means the former Atletico Madrid star is off the market in January, and his price is expected to rise if the Red Devils consider a summer approach. If possible, INEOS should focus all of their efforts on getting Victor Osimhen in a swap transaction.
