Fraud arrests at Middlesbrough Football Club charity

On suspicion of embezzling tens of thousands of pounds from a charity connected to Middlesbrough Football Club, two individuals have been placed under arrest.

Following an internal investigation that uncovered purported financial irregularities, investigators were called to the MFC located in the Community centre in Eston.

On suspicion of fraud and money laundering, a 39-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were taken into custody.

While more investigation is conducted, they have been freed on bond.

Praised by Blair

Fifteen years ago, Middlesbrough launched its football in the community program to give back to the neighbourhood.

Tony Blair, the prime minister at the time, hailed it as one of the greatest in the nation in 2007 and said it uses football to promote healthy living and education.

Even though the club provides financial support, the scheme is managed independently and has its own board of trustees.

“We can confirm that after an internal investigation we are now assisting the police with enquiries regarding financial irregularities relating to our community scheme,” stated Dave Allan, the club’s head of communications.
