“Fearful”: Sheffield Wednesday transfer admission made over Sheffield United target
In the event that Tom Cannon’s parent club Leicester City recalls him from his current loan spell with Stoke City, Sheffield Wednesday is one of the Championship teams fighting for his services.
Alan Nixon stated on Sunday that the forward was a target for both the Owls and fellow second-tier team Luton Town.
Meanwhile, in late December, journalist Darren Witcoop reported via X that Wednesday’s Steel City rivals Sheffield United were also focused on making a raid for the 22-year-old.
Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit makes Cannon transfer admission
Given the club’s dearth of goals from attackers and Wednesday and Stoke’s respective positions in the Championship table, Football League World asked our Owls fan analyst Patrick McKenna if he thought Cannon would be a dream signing for Danny Rohl’s team and if he could see the deal going through.

Regarding Tom Cannon, Patrick stated: “I agree that our strikers haven’t been very effective this season, and adding another striker wouldn’t be a bad thing, especially since Ike Ugbo has been struggling so badly. However, defence is the area that really needs the most urgent surgery.” However, Tom Cannon has shown in the Championship that he can score goals on a regular basis, so if we are able to bring him in on loan, he would be a good, solid addition to the team, and I could see him doing well in the second half of the season.
“Dare I say it, almost like Ugbo coming in last season, added on a few additional goals which proved very crucial in the end, and can I see us going in for him?
“Well, right now, we have to look at how the situation is playing out.
“Danny Rohl is quite publicly showing his frustrations that there’s been no communication with (owner Dejphon) Chansiri, and, subsequently, a lack of direction on maybe who he can get in, or what the funds are and at the general direction.
“Because, yeah, it’d be all well and good, Danny Rohl identifying targets, if he doesn’t know his budget, or if he has to go to Chansiri individually, kind of begging for money.
“So, right now, I’m fearful that the sort of signing like Tom Cannon isn’t going to happen.
“Danny Rohl did hint that we’d get more answers on the loan situation at the fans’ forum on the 15th of January.
“With that, I kind of fear that’s just going to be another rant by Chansiri saying there’s no money, and somehow it’s the fans’ fault.
“So, yeah, right now, Tom Cannon, I would take him, but I’m not even sure that we’re going to get in a few loans in January, like we did last season with (Ian) Poveda, (James) Beadle and Ugbo, and we could be looking at a situation (like) in our last season in League One.”
Cannon could be a great signing for Wednesday
As alluded to by Patrick, the Owls seem unlikely to be overly busy during the current transfer window, due to the ongoing ownership of Chansiri, who has not historically allowed the club to bring in many players in January.
In fact, as per the Sheffield Star, the South Yorkshire outfit made just six new signings during the winter windows between 2021 and 2023, although, interestingly, four of those additions arrived last campaign, when Rohl and co were fighting against relegation.
This time around, though, the Owls do not seem to be in any relegation trouble, and supporters will be eyeing up the play-off places, with Wednesday sitting just three points below the top-six.
Chansiri may be less ready to spend during the current transfer window than he was at this time last year, though, given that the bottom three are not in danger.
Cannon, who has scored nine goals in 22 league games for a Stoke team that is only four points above the relegation zone, would be a great addition if the Owls can sign him.
Ugbo, a forward for Wednesday who has led the line for his team in both of their previous Championship games, has not scored in 24 games in the second division and missed a penalty in Saturday’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Millwall.
