After spending some time with Altrincham earlier this season, Olson, 20, reconnected with them in December. To far, he has played nine games for the non-league team.

“Charlie has a great skill set and has complemented Lewis Baines perfectly since coming in,” their manager Phil Parkinson wrote on their website. We know he provides tremendous strength and depth at the core of our defence, and it has nearly pushed the club to keep him on for the rest of the season.

After 24 games, Alty is currently four points outside of the playoffs in 10th place in the fifth division.

Loan update for Blackburn Rovers

Olson was given permission by Blackburn Rovers to join Altrincham in order to gain some experience.

Allowing him to stay will benefit his development and benefit all parties.

With Alty trying to sneak into the top seven, he will now be seeking to acquire a lot of playing time before the season ends.

Blackburn Rovers has had Olson on the books for the entirety of his career.

He has progressed through the championship team’s system and has played consistently for them at several youth levels.

Under Mike Sheron’s tutelage, the centre-back has recently emerged as a vital member of the Under-21 squad.

Prior to being given professional terms in 2023, Olson signed a scholarship contract in 2021. “It’s a huge day and a really proud moment for me and my family,” he remarked at the time.

It’s something I’ve dreamed of and worked for since I was a small boy, so it’s incredible that it’s finally happening. Being a professional football player is the ultimate aspiration of many young children; therefore for me to eventually achieve this, this is a dream come true.

The Lancashire club will have to make a significant choice when the Liverpool-born player’s contract expires at the end of the current season.

Now what?
When he returns from Altrincham at the end of this term, Blackburn Rovers will need to decide what to do next.

This weekend, John Evans’s team travels to play Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.
