Joe Thomas thinks that if the proper price is provided, Jaden Philogene of Aston Villa might yet finalize a permanent transfer to Everton this month.
After Philogene turned down a summer transfer to Goodison Park, the Blues have begun talks with Aston Villa to find the terms for signing him in January, according to Fabrizio Romano (7 January).
Though Thomas expressed his opinion on the developments for the Liverpool Echo transfer blog [7 January, 10:57am], he believes Everton might persuade Villa to make a permanent trade, even though Unai Emery would prefer a loan agreement.
He wrote: “At Villa, there is a sense that even if they are considering loan requests for him and would like to hold onto him because they believe he might thrive somewhere, there is also an understanding that he most likely won’t have the chances to truly develop while at the club.
If Everton can make a significant enough offer to convince Villa that it would be worth taking the chance of seeing him succeed someplace else, then it basically opens the way for them. We do know that Villa and Everton get along well with each other because they collaborated in June despite their PSR issues.
“There is a good and useful relationship there because Tim Iroegbunam joined Everton from Villa in the summer, while Lewis Dobbin and Amadou Onana ultimately left.”
The last time the Toffees tried to sign Philogene, Evertonians were disappointed, but his return to Aston Villa hasn’t gone as planned.
During his 18-goal season at the MKM Stadium, the 22-year-old was a formidable force in the Championship last year. Hull City manager Liam Rosenior called his skill “ridiculous” [Hull City, February 2024].
Since then, he has only played in 11 Premier League games at Villa Park, primarily as a substitute, and has missed three of the previous five matchday lineups.
Because the forward obviously has no future in the West Midlands, it makes sense for all parties to arrange a deal this month despite Villa’s objections.
Given that Jack Harrison and Armando Broja currently occupy the two domestic loan spaces and that one would have to return to their original club if a loan were the only practical alternative, a permanent deal would also meet Everton’s needs.
The Blues could complete the signing quickly, though, given the two parties’ relationship is still strong after they supported one another over the summer’s PSR deadline.
If The Friedkin Group is serious about their plans at Goodison Park, then this signing is a no-brainer. Philogene is a creative player, and the Toffees lack it.
