A statement from the board of Southampton FC

We hereby certify that we have made the tough choice to fire Russell Martin, our Men’s First Team Manager.

As we prepared to play in the world’s greatest and most competitive league, we were all aware of the difficulties we

would encounter this season as we readapted to life in the top flight.

The truth of our predicament, however, is evident. In addition to being clear and honest about our expectations, the

board has stood with Russell and his team. For the most part, we have all agreed that improvement is urgently

needed.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have

given the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months. Everyone connected with Southampton FC will always

have fantastic memories of last season, especially the Play-Off Final win in May.

Current Under-21s Manager Simon Rusk will take charge of the team on an interim basis until we announce a

permanent replacement.

The ongoing development of talent that passes through our Academy gives us encouragement behind the scenes. We

are pleased with the contributions our young players are making and are sure that everyone connected to the club

will continue to find strength and pride in them.

We are also profoundly appreciative for the continuing support and positivity given by our supporters. especially

though the results have not been what we all wanted, your understanding and passion continue to fuel our long-term

dedication to the club, especially as we observe firsthand the stark differences between the Championship and the

Premier League.
