Swansea City: Will Swans match Wycombe demands for Low?
Joe Low’s name is already generating a lot of buzz in January, and we’re only a little over five days in.The Swans have made a bid and are set to make another, while Plymouth Argyle and Preston are also interested in the midfielder, according to reports from yesterday evening.
Yesterday, we reported on Matt Bloomfield’s comments that Low was destined for greater things. All reports and sources close to Wycombe believe that the Chairboys will cash in this window rather than seeing one of their prized assets walk for free next summer. That all makes perfect sense from Wycombe’s standpoint, and it has been widely speculated that they have a price on his head of around £750,000.
Our dilemma is if we are willing to pay that much for a player who has only six months left on his contract. The bid we are alleged to have rejected is one-third of that amount, and I don’t see us going that high with the next bid, which means we may face competition from sides who are tempted at that price.
This could be where the thoughts become fascinating.Plymouth, I believe, would be willing to spend that kind of money if they believe Low can tighten up their defence in order to stay at this level, but most pundits believe the Pilgrims are destined for League One, which I do not see as a good long-term solution for Low’s ambition.
Preston could well be tempted and are a well established Championship team which could be a temptation for Low and of course there are other Championship clubs in the hunt. I would also not completely rule out Birmingham City in the middle of these discussions – given their interest in Harry Darling they are clearly in a hunt for a defender and Low maybe an option they turn to?
One of the distinctions in this deal for Low is that the player holds the majority of the cards, and while Wycombe can control the present price, the player can simply run down his contract to ensure he gets his preferred move. It’s unclear whether that preferred move is to Swansea City, but Luke Williams and Andy Coleman will definitely hope so.
What appears to be clear about this particular athlete is that further news and interest have yet to be disclosed. The Swans are obviously in the race, but as I mentioned before, I’m not convinced they can match Wycombe’s asking price, which means he won’t join us in January but doesn’t rule us out completely.
