Royals add ex-Dodgers, Blue Jays standout in free agency

The Kansas City Royals shocked the MLB world by making it to the playoffs in 2024, with Bobby Witt Jr. having an MVP-caliber season. They simply ran into the buzzsaw that is the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. The Royals have established a strong foundation for future success and aim to add more positive players to their team following a successful 2024 season.

To that end, the Royals hope to give a former top prospect an opportunity to restart his career. The Royals have signed utility player Cavan Biggio on a minor-league deal, following a difficult 2024 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Atlanta Braves.

There is evidence to assume Biggio’s 2024 season was an exception. His power production plummeted last season, with a career-low slugging percentage. However, it is troubling that the 29-year-old’s strikeout rate has continued to rise, and it is telling that the Dodgers, a franchise that has successfully resurrected the careers of several reclamation projects, could no longer create room for him.

Nonetheless, Biggio isn’t anticipated to play a significant part for the Royals. He will compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster, and he may still have a few productive years in the big leagues. However, the Royals may have a spot on the bench for him, and Biggio must take advantage of this opportunity, as failure to do so could spell the end of his MLB career.

Cavan Biggio, the son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, was expected to be a key member of the next great Toronto Blue Jays club. And Biggio’s rookie season suggested that this was the case, as he blasted 16 home runs and drove in 48 runs in 430 plate appearances, totalling 2.6 WAR in 2019.

However, Biggio’s performance has deteriorated since then. His productivity at the plate has been inconsistent, and just when it appeared like he was turning a corner with the Blue Jays in 2023, he dropped dramatically in 2024. The Royals will have their work cut out for them in trying to resuscitate the former top prospect’s career.
