Nemanja Matic: Ipswich Town eyeing shock move for ex-Manchester United midfielder
Ipswich Town, led by Kieran McKenna, are apparently interested in signing Nemanja Matic, a former Manchester United midfielder.
Matic left United in the summer of 2022, after five years at Old Trafford, to join AS Roma as a free agent, where he spent one season.
He subsequently went on to Rennes last summer, although his stay there was brief. Matic signed for fellow Ligue 1 club Lyon in January 2024, where he has remained since.
The Serbian signed a deal that runs until the summer of 2026. Matic has appeared in 13 top-flight games this season for Lyon.
According to Foot Mercato, the ex-United player might return to the Premier League, with Ipswich keen in signing him.
The Tractor Boys are thought to be considering a bid for Matic as they look to avoid relegation in the second part of the 2024/25 season.
Ipswich are in their debut season in the Premier League after a 22-year sabbatical, presently sitting in 18th position with 16 points.
According to Foot Mercato, McKenna’s squad values Matic’s past expertise in England’s top division.
They are not the only team interested in signing the 36-year-old. Cesc Fabregas, his former Chelsea colleague, also wants him at Como.
However, they are likely to be disappointed since Matic “has no intention” of leaving Lyon. He’s content there and is “looking to the future with confidence.”
Matic made 183 appearances for United since joining from Chelsea in 2017.
