Mariota leads Washington to 12th win, but run game issues loom heading into Wildcard weekend

The Commanders rallied for their 12th win of the season, but their inability to run the ball and stop the run remained a problem.

In the Washington Commanders’ regular-season finale against the Dallas Cowboys, backup quarterback Marcus Mariota led the team to 20 second-half points, including the game-winning touchdown throw to Terry McLaurin. Still, Washington’s 12th win of the season is an incredible eight-game improvement over the prior season. Their increase from one season to the next is the best in the NFL since the 2018-2019 San Francisco 49ers, who improved by +9 wins.

While Washington escaped defeat, the stench of the same red flags that have haunted Washington all season is difficult to ignore. Alternatively, the Commanders are now playing with house money, and making the playoffs in their first season under Dan Quinn and Jayden Daniels is an excellent start to their time in Washington. Despite their roster issues, the team’s competitiveness and desire to win make them a formidable opponent for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday.
