Ipswich Town’s transfer delivered a setback to Leeds United’s future transfer intentions.

Since Ipswich Town is currently the front-runner to sign the Atalanta star, Daniel Farke may not be able to reunite with former Norwich City defender Ben Godfrey.

The former Everton player, who appears destined to depart Serie A this month after failing to secure a spot in the first squad, has been heavily linked to Leeds United on loan. Farke and Godfrey’s past together—the two gained promotion to the Premier League with Norwich in 2019—was considered a crucial component of any agreement, but it seems the Premier League’s allure might be the decisive factor.

After spending five years at Goodison Park after leaving Norwich for Everton, Godfrey moved to Italy in June with Atalanta for almost £11 million. The 26-year-old’s stint in Serie A hasn’t gone as planned, though, as he has only made five appearances overall, including in the league.
But if Leeds were promoted back to the Premier League, a summer transfer for Godfrey was always more possible. In light of this, Ipswich is prepared to make Godfrey an offer right now, with a loan move likely to follow a permanent July contract.

“Ben Godfrey finished his Ipswich medical earlier today, ahead of a loan move from Atalanta,” tweeted transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. In the next 24 to 48 hours, all parties aim to finalize a settlement.

Due to the Irishman’s lack of popularity at the City Ground, Leeds has also been linked to a move for Nottingham Forest defender Andrew Omobamidele.
