Evan Weir has plenty of examples to aspire to in quest for Walsall breakthrough

Mat Sadler maintains Evan Weir, a defender for Walsall, has several role models to follow as he attempts to make his first team debut.

On just his second league start, Weir made an impression as Walsall defeated Notts County 2-1 on New Year’s Day, extending their winning streak to seven games in League Two.

The 22-year-old, who last started in the league in September, contributed two assists and a spectacular goal-line clearance to keep the Saddlers’ 12-point lead at the top of the standings.

Sadler’s decision to rest Taylor Allen, who himself enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2024 after previously being on the fringes, presented Weir with a rare chance in League Two.

Additionally, Weir’s manager praised his performance, and Sadler praised his attitude throughout a difficult first half-year in England.

“We have that,” he stated, “which is why I utilise those instances (like Allen’s ascension). I can look back and say that this is what happened in the case of a lot of our guys.

“I spoke with Evan extensively a few weeks ago and expressed my admiration for him. You put in a lot of work behind the scenes when you’re not playing every single week, so it may be challenging.

“And he has come as a young player playing week in, week out. So sometimes it can be tough but he hasn’t shown that.

“He is a wonderful person to work with and long may that continue.”
