Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers furious after ‘lack of respect’ shown by supporters amid Arsenal transfer ‘talks
Brendan Rodgers, the manager of Celtic, was upset with some fans’ lack of respect.
Following parts of the crowd chanting the name of Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney at Parkhead on Sunday
afternoon, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has taken aim at his team’s own supporters. Days after it was revealed
that the club was in discussions to bring Tierney back to the team, the defending Scottish champions played St.
Mirren at Celtic Park.
According to BBC Sport, Celtic and Arsenal have discussed re-signing the Scotland international on a pre-contract
agreement. Six years ago this summer, the left back paid £25 million to join the Gunners from Celtic, although he
has spent much of his time in North London dealing with injuries. Although he has made 125 appearances for the
North London team, he did play on loan at Real Sociedad during the previous season.
Tierney is available for Celtic to talk to and join this summer on a free transfer. They have until January 1st to agree
to a pre-contract agreement, but other clubs are reportedly interested. Before joining the Gunners, the 27-year-old
won four Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic. From 2016 to 2018, he was voted the Glasgow club’s Young Player of
the Year three times in a row.
Rodgers angry at supporter chants
“There were a few things that I may have overheard at the end there,” Rodgers remarked following Celtic’s victory
over St. Mirren, which put them 13 points ahead of the opposition in the Scottish Premiership. That is completely
disrespectful. There is, of course. At this club, Greg Taylor has been outstanding. How is he feeling? For a purpose,
he almost fractures his nose, bleeding for the club. It’s not very polite. You sing for someone else, regardless of
Kieran’s past. That bothers me. There are many names and a lot of conjecture, but I wouldn’t offer anything.
He continued: “I put myself in his shoes when he’s playing left-back in the game. Especially when you’re doing so
much for the club and have given so much for the club. I’m not sure (If he heard the chants), I haven’t spoken to him,
but I don’t think he can miss it. But what I know is every single day of his life it’s up to him. He’s there for the team,
he stands up and be counted. The next mistake, he goes again. I get a greater appreciation even now, working with
him closely. I’m really hopeful that we’ll keep him.”
