Chris Wilder drops Sheffield United transfer claim involving new owners as Southampton FC agreement nears
After lengthy negotiations, Prince Abdullah’s ownership of the Blades was finally finalized at the end of December. The American consortium COH Sports, led by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, took over the team in the midst of a competition to return to the Premier League at the first attempt.
The timing of Rosen and Eltoukhy’s joint purchase of the team was ideal, and they plan to support Chris Wilder in his attempt to remove United from the Championship. They would have been at the top of the league if they hadn’t been docked two points before the season began, but as of this writing, they are only one point behind league leaders Leeds United. When Wilder’s team returns to action on Thursday night, they will host Championship rivals Cardiff City at Bramall Lane in an FA Cup third-round match. They may have new players in the building when the Bluebirds arrive.
Chris Wilder’s letter to Sheffield United’s owners in light of the Ben Brereton Diaz and Southampton FC transfers
It should come as no surprise that Sheffield United has been connected to a number of names just days into the winter transfer window, considering their league position and new ownership. Grant Hanley, Hamza Choudhury, and Andrew Omobamidele have all been linked to moves to South Yorkshire in reports, and there have been developments in the deal to bring back Brereton Diaz, who spent the second half of the previous season on loan with United in the Premier League and is now expected to join soon after being named Wilder’s top target. The Lane is going through a busy period, and Wilder took the time to thank the team, and especially the owners, for “working overtime” and providing assistance.
In response to a question about whether any additions would be made in time for the match against Omer Riza’s Cardiff later this week, Wilder told The Star: “Possibly. We’re working longer hours. The proprietors and the CEO, Stephen Bettis, are providing amazing assistance and are putting in extra hours. They see what everyone else sees, and the supporters see it, too, about the squad’s strength.
The signing of Ben Brereton-Diaz represents Sheffield United’s declaration of intent.
The reason Wilder seems so content right now is obvious: the new owners are supporting him and want to create an immediate impression to assist the Blades return to the big league. Now that Brereton-Diaz is back together, they will have an even better chance of making a quick return to the promised land.
The Chilean forward scored six goals in 16 games last season, despite the team’s miserable relegation from the top division. Brereton-Diaz joined Southampton permanently from Villarreal when his loan with United ended, but things haven’t gone so well there. Despite his demonstrated skills in the Championship and at Bramall Lane, he hasn’t opened his account yet.
