West Brom’s Chris Brunt makes squad “recharge” decision in wake of “bad draw”

Albion players will be handed a couple of days off to recharge after falling to a “bad draw” at Swansea.

The Baggies’ intense festive and New Year period came to an end with a frustrating 1-1 draw in south Wales, where the hosts bagged a stoppage-time equaliser.

Albion, still managerless and once again under Chris Brunt, Damia Abella and Boaz Myhill, looked like claiming rare back-to-back wins as Tom Fellows struck after the hour.

The draw made it eight points from a possible 15 across 14 days – and a return of five points from 12 under the interim team. Brunt admitted a “gutted” dressing room will be handed time off, but the interim boss felt there could be positives to take upon reflection.

“We’re all disappointed in there,” Brunt said. “There are a lot of positives. When it’s looked back on I’m sure there’s a lot of positives to be had.

Chris Brunt applauds Albion on as the visitors tried to see out a 1-0 victory on the road at Swansea.

Albion have been undone in the closing stages on the road on several occasions this term. Brunt, though, was satisfied with how the side responded at 1-0 up – until Allen’s intervention.

“I think we had to make changes just on the period and the amount of games we played in however many days it is, I don’t know!” added the interim head coach.

“We had to make changes, you can’t ask your two forward players, your two wide players to keep going and going and going for that amount of time.

“So we freshened it up with a few bodies. You take Josh (Maja) and Karlan (Grant) off because they’ve run themselves into the ground in the last week.

“I don’t think it really affected the energy. Grady (Diangana) and Devante Cole kept the tempo high when they came on. It is what it is you concede goals sometimes, that was the case. It’s not really been the case this season, defensively we’ve always been pretty good, but it would’ve been nice to finish with a clean sheet.”
