Ryan Barnett says Phil Parkinson does one thing at Wrexham he’d rather ‘avoid’ – although it’s for his own good
Despite his irate team discussions, Ryan Barnett of Wrexham has been showing his affection for his manager, Phil Parkinson, who celebrated his 1,000th game in charge over the weekend.
The success of Wrexham has mostly depended on Phil Parkinson’s superb squad management; the seasoned coach has guided the Red Dragons from the National League to the top divisions of League One.
Parkinson marked his 1,000th game as a manager by defeating Peterborough on Saturday afternoon, with his ‘powerful team’ proving to be too much for the Posh.
Ryan Barnett was absent for the game, but took time to discuss the methods of his manager and why Parkinson’s approach to team talks is so effective.
Phil Parkinson’s angry team talks are all for the good of the team
In an interview with The Athletic during a large-scale commemoration of Parkinson’s milestone, Ryan Barnett was questioned about Parkinson’s notoriously heated team discussions. He acknowledged that he dread them, but he also acknowledged that the Wrexham manager always acts with the best of intentions.
I have [experienced that] a couple times, sure,” he added. Although it’s not fantastic and I hope to avoid it for the remainder of the season, you have to accept the honesty with which it’s done. His words are delivered with affection. He only wants the best for you and the team; he isn’t being cruel to you.
Fortunately, Parkinson’s outbursts against his club have probably been a lot less often given Wrexham’s recent performance, particularly that amazing unbeaten run at the Racecourse Ground.
While Parkinson highlighted ‘togetherness’ as the key to Wrexham’s success, you can’t deny that a spot of tough love every now and again is the way forward.
Their ability to persevere in the face of adversity and grind out victories, particularly in the closing minutes of games, has made Wrexham famous. The influence of Parkinson’s team talks is the reason why none of that would occur, at least not as often.
As demonstrated in the film Welcome to Wrexham, it is a cornerstone of his managerial approach. Parkinson’s inspirational speeches are not only powerful but also well justified.
Although no one at Wrexham would want Parkinson to be any different, it is impossible for him to change now after 1,000 games in manager.
