Mark Robins has his say on ‘brilliant reception’ as he makes Stoke City entrance
Mark Robins has thanked Stoke City supporters as he started life as manager
As he begins his managerial career, Mark Robins has expressed gratitude to Stoke City fans for their kind welcome.
A crowd of almost 26,000 people gave Robins a standing ovation prior to the bet365 Stadium’s goalless tie with
Plymouth Argyle. He is already optimistic that he has found a new home for many years to come, even though he was
sad not to be lifted off with a win.
His words, “It was a brilliant reception,” “I truly appreciate it, and I had a great time digging out today. Although a
victory would have been wonderful, we were unable to achieve it, but it has been amazing. I’m excited to continue
working here for many years to come.
He added: “I’ve loved it. I’m stood on the touchline and trying to work out how to (make a breakthrough). It wasn’t
tactical today. Not really tactical. It was just bits of movements when we needed to be in better positions but
ultimately we needed to be better. There are a lot of things to work on and we will. It’s not quite right but over time it
will get there, we’ve just got to work on it.”
Robins has enjoyed getting to know the squad he has inherited, albeit that he has only had one day of training with
the full group so far.
“They’re excellent. We haven’t done much training, but even yesterday they spent an hour and a half standing. They
needed to work and comprehend what we were asking, and they did, even though we were trying not to put too much
strain on their bodies. They have sat, watched, listened, and participated, and hopefully that will begin to sink in and
become ingrained. To put it another way, we have worked very hard on the game model and have drip-fed them a lot
of information over the past few days. We must really continue.
“You have to realise that a low block game can’t always be a fast-paced one. It appears a little more dynamic when
you consider the last few games, where Leeds, Sunderland, and Burnley are trying to get the ball back. When you do,
there is room for you to run into and pass into. We didn’t quite get that right, so if they’re sitting behind the ball like
they are today, you need to attempt to move it a little bit more systematically while still moving it swiftly.”
