‘Here we go’: Tottenham lose transfer race for defender labeled’really’good’ by Carlo Ancelotti
Spurs were reported to have expressed interest in acquiring the Atalanta defender.
Premier League opponents Ipswich Town seem to have outbid Tottenham Hotspur for the loan signing of Atalanta
defender Ben Godfrey.
Amid the injury issue in North London, Spurs have been linked to the former Everton player, but the Premier League
underdogs have moved the quickest during the January transfer window. On Saturday night, transfer specialist
Fabrizio Romano hinted at an impending confirmation on the social media site X.
Romano wrote: “Ben Godfrey to Ipswich Town, exclusive story confirmed — agreement done on loan deal with
Atalanta. Godfrey completed first part of medical tests today and documents are now being exchanged. Here we go.”
Ipswich Town to complete January transfer
and is now set to return to the Premier League. It is believed that Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna has played a
key role in persuading the player to join his side’s fight for survival in the top flight. The Tractor Boys sit 18th in the
table, one point off Wolves in 17th, after 19 matches played following their back-to-back promotions.
Last month, former Premier League scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Tottenham Hotspur was interested
in loaning the player. “There is definitely value in signing him on loan,” he stated.
When Romero and Van de Ven decide how long they would be away, they want someone to cover for them if it will be
a month or maybe two. Since those two will be your first choice when they return, there’s little purpose in spending a
lot of money on a new defender you won’t employ.
I was informed that his agent has been promoting a move back to England. He’s simply not that kind of player, and
Everton let him go for a reason, therefore I wouldn’t have picked him to help Tottenham advance. However, they
have injuries at critical spots, and his availability makes the deal simple.
Carlo Ancelotti a fan of ‘really good’ centre-back
Godfrey began his career at York City before breaking through at Norwich City following a move in 2016. He then moved to Everton following the Canaries’ relegation in 2020.
“I said in the past that we are looking for a centre-back because we are short there, and Godfrey is a really good centre-back, but he is currently playing for Norwich, so I can’t say more,” former Toffees manager Carlo Ancelotti said in reference to transfer rumours involving the player prior to that £25 million move to Goodison Park.
After the center-back’s January 2024 transfer attempt failed, Atalanta paid £10 million to sign him in the summer. When he made the move, he was in the last 12 months of his Everton deal.
