John Eustace was frustrated with Blackburn Rovers’ lack of quality in the final third following their narrow 1-0 loss to Burnley.
It was a game lacking of quality that appeared to finish equal, with neither team producing many opportunities. However, the Clarets created one vital moment when Zian Flemming headed in at the back post to win the East Lancashire derby.
Rovers finished the game with only one shot on goal, and that one was doubtful. Burley did not produce much more, but when they did, they delivered with clinical precision.
Eustace believed his team created numerous opportunities to punish Burnley on the counter-attack but lacked the talent to capitalise.
“I am very disappointed to lose, I was very proud of the efforts today,” remarked the winner.
“We went head to head with a good team and a very excellent roster of players. It was a local derby, and we put out our best effort, but it appeared that there would only be one goal. I am dissatisfied in the manner in which we conceded the goal.
“We switched off from a cross, their first attempt on goal. Looking at the three games against the top three or four, I believe we performed admirably.
“As you can see, we need some help in the squad. We must continue to improve and have players return from injury as soon as feasible. The next two weeks may allow us to do so. We missed seven players who could have played today but were unavailable.
“We started well, but you have to remember that you’re playing a good team, and you can’t always keep that momentum continuing. We started well in the second half, and then they scored on their first attempt, which was unfortunate.
“You might say it should have been 0-0, but to get promoted or win close games, you need talent.
“When they have a chance, they score. We had numerous opportunities to counter them and score, but our last pass or decision-making was terrible.
“That is something we are working on and have become better at, but in these close games, every bit of quality counts. I believe it is clear that we got the ball back on numerous times and had excellent opportunities to transition and counter them, but that let us down.
Rovers now have a two-week respite before their next Championship game, with the FA Cup taking main stage next week.
Eustace remains hopeful that the recruitment team will give the necessary assistance, and he would prefer that it happen sooner rather than later.
“It’s a big derby, there won’t be much quality in the game,” he said once more.
“The group has been excellent throughout the first half. We need to reboot and concentrate. 22,000 fans was incredible to behold, creating a fantastic mood.
“I’d like to get players in as quickly as possible. The teams around us have already signed players. The sooner we can bring guys in, the better.”
