Police made six arrests during the Blackburn Rovers and Burnley game at Ewood Park.

Officers are also investigating additional occurrences that occurred within the stadium. The visitors won the game 1-0, and the police said that they were aware of other instances of racist behaviour and seats being torn out.

Officers did, however, applaud most of the supporters for their conduct during Blackburn’s largest crowd of the season.

Inside the stadium, a 52-year-old Darwen man was taken into custody on suspicion of common assault. He is still being held.

A further five people were arrested outside the stadium and also remain in custody.  They are:

• A 19-year-old man from Burnley and a second individual who was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

• An 18-year-old man from Burnley who was arrested on suspicion of Assaulting a Police Officer

• A 53-year-old man from Preston who was arrested on suspicion of Section 5 Pubic Order.

• A 36-year-old man from Darwen was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

Officers said other offences were being investigated including the throwing of objects by both sets of supports, criminal damage such as seats being ripped out and racist behaviour.

The match finished 1-0 to the visitors A police spokesperson said: “We will be reviewing evidence, including all footage available, and working with both clubs to identify those involved. They should expect to be arrested and/or receive Football Banning Orders.

“We will maintain an enhanced police presence throughout East Lancashire for the remainder of the day.”

The Silver Commander for the match, Supt Derry Crorken, stated:

“A major police effort was conducted today to guarantee the safe passage of the most recent East Lancashire Derby.

“In what was a hotly contested game, I want to thank the great majority of fans for properly supporting their side.

Unfortunately, a small number of reckless people committed crimes. A few of those people have been taken into custody after being apprehended.

“We will carefully examine the evidence that has been collected thus far and seek to make additional arrests moving forward.”orward.”
