Leeds United’s Championship rival and top scorer at risk of six-game ban after FA spitting charge in boost to Joel Piroe

Currently leading the second division in goals scored, Norwich City’s Borja Sainz was charged by the Football Association last week for allegedly spitting. During the 74th minute of the Canaries’ most recent match against Sunderland, the Spaniard is alleged to have spat in the direction of an opponent. Although it was reported to the referee and included in the post-match report, match officials at the time failed to notice this, allowing the FA to administer penalty retroactively in the event that Sainz accepts the charge or is found guilty of the offense.

“Norwich City’s Borja Sainz has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E1.1 following their EFL Championship match against Sunderland on Saturday, December 21, 2024,” an FA spokesperson tweeted on Friday, January 3.The forward is accused of spitting at an opponent in the 74th minute, which is a sending-off offense. The deadline for Borja Sainz to respond is Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

With 15 goals this season, Sainz leads the championship in scoring, while Josh Maja of West Bromwich Albion is second with 10. However, Piroe, who finished nine times in 2024–2025, is not far behind.Samuel Saiz, a former midfielder for Leeds, was found to have spat at an opponent in 2018 and received a six-match suspension. Piroe, Maja, and other top scorers would have the opportunity to overtake Sainz in the Golden Boot competition with a comparable sanction.
