Ike Ugbo misses penalty as Sheffield Wednesday draw with Millwall
George Honeyman and Ryan Wintle scored second-half goals to give the visitors an unexpected advantage.
Sheffield Wednesday squandered a good opportunity to boost their play-off drive, settling for a 2-2 draw against Millwall at Hillsborough.
Substitute Gabriel Otegbayo saved the home side’s blushes with an 85th-minute equalizer, just when it appeared the Lions had done enough to secure three implausible points.
Yan Valery gave the Owls an early lead, and they should have been out of sight when Ike Ugbo missed a penalty and three Wednesday players struck the crossbar before second-half goals from George Honeyman and Ryan Wintle put the visitors ahead.
Alex Neil’s first away game in command got off to a dreadful start as Valery tucked home an Anthony Musaba cross to put the home side ahead after only six minutes.
Within three minutes, the visitors almost answered when Japhet Tanganga’s hard header was blocked in the area, and Di’Shon Bernard cleared a Casper De Norre attempt.
Following their respite, the Owls had nearly complete control, pummeling Millwall’s weak left flank and squandering many opportunities to extend their advantage.
Shea Charles sent a long-range shot over the crossbar, Musaba was stopped by a timely block by Joe Bryan, and Ugbo brushed off defender Murray Wallace but struck over the face of goal.
Wednesday could have increased their advantage just before halftime when Bryan took down Musaba in the box, but Ugbo’s penalty went high and wide.
Early in the second half, Josh Windass rattled the underside of the bar, and after the ball was cleared off the line, Barry Bannan rocked keeper Lukas Jensen’s left-hand post.
Millwall appeared to be making Danny Rohl’s side pay for their missed opportunities until George Saville’s free-kick dribbled through to Honeyman, who showed remarkable control to sweep the equalizer past James Beadle.
After Musaba became the third Owls player to hit the crossbar, the Lions attempted to make a late comeback when replacement Wintle bundled home the second after Romain Esse’s original effort was saved.
Otegbayo drew Wednesday level almost immediately following a Windass flick-on, and Wintle’s free-kick was saved by Beadle as the action lasted until injury time.
