A point gained for the Swans : Allen isn’t dead Baggies !

This game was attended by just over 14,600 people at Swansea.com. It is estimated that 13,000 Swans supporters

attended this game, excluding the support of the visitors. The ground appears extremely bare, and season ticket

holders are always featured whether they are present or not. I would have been shocked if there had been 11,000

home fans at this game. This afternoon, a good few thousand people had stayed away. And all the way down to what

we may have anticipated on the final Saturday before most people go back to work on Monday.

Many people may conclude that early kickoff games don’t draw large crowds based on the large numbers of empty

seats surrounding Swansea.com. But don’t fool yourself—this week’s instance of egotistical behaviour is also to

blame. Because of the low attendance, no one was able to fully utilise the Sky TV justification. This was a response to

the instability that Luke Williams, the head coach of Swansea, had introduced into the team.

What’s the crack then Luke ?

Early in the game, both teams had opportunities. The Baggies had a few attempts at the Swansea goal, but Vigouroux

was not put to the test. A brief scramble in front of goal was cleared shortly after, but it at least gave the game some

atmosphere. The Swans were given a second corner of the game at nine minutes. Harry Darling headed the ball

slightly that resulted in a third corner after that. The Baggies exploited the captain’s poor play after Matt Grimes

fumbled the ball. Liam Cullen had lots of space for another move in the eleventh minute, but he headed the chance

over the bar.

The Swans were looking good as Eom set up Franco for a long distance effort which went wide.

On fourteen the unfortunate Grimes again gave away the ball which led to a break and a corner for the visitors. That

came to nothing but seconds later a through ball for Grant saw the Swans keeper clear with a diving header. The

pitch was cutting up and most certainly wasn’t helping free flowing football.

The visitors had the better of the game, Bianchini gave the ball away lazily on eighty six minutes, solid proof the

determination had long been sucked out of this Swans side. Luke Williams response to get a goal was to take off the

Swans top scorer, Liam Cullen and replace him with Joe Allen. That would later be seen as a master stroke. As we

said, ‘What’s the crack then Luke’ ? Williams naivety at times has been galling, but this time, maybe this time it

would come good ? His squad tactics and in game management has always been under question, admittedly he has

some poor players at his disposal but he is the one who takes the plaudits and the blame. An attack at the death of

the game saw Grimes put in a dangerous ball, it bounced off a Swansea head fell to Ronald (below) who calmly

crossed for of all people, Joe Allen to head home.

It was the perfect touch from a player who always gives his all.

The fact that the Swans scored in this game, even if they didn’t look like they would, will give many Swans supporters

some hope in this squad. What we witnessed today is exactly what was anticipated. There were few Swans players

who were giving it their best. Williams gets few opportunities to support the offence off the bench in the major.

That’s the problem. It wasn’t a particularly good game, but it was entertaining, and the Swans players did cheer what

was left of the audience when the final whistle blew. The surprising objective of earning a point is quite fulfilling.

Still, there are a lot of unanswered questions, the recent week, and the small number of attendees.

When Joe Allen arrived, it was the high point of the day. The Baggies fans chanted, “We thought you were dead, we

thought you were dead, Joe Allen, we thought you were dead.” “He scores with his head, Joey Allen, he scores with

his head” is the only way we can reply. The Swans made a strong comeback, but today’s true heroes are those who

took the time out of their hectic schedules to come cheer on our team.
